Main content

At Master-level, we provide a comprehensive program on advanced structures and aerospace engineering. Courses combine academic challenges with high application relevance, providing in-depth knowledge and skills in theoretical aspects, computational methods, materials and process technologies to successfully tackle challenging engineering problems. Students are strongly integrated in ongoing research activities of the Centre and work closely together with PhD students. Admission is ruled by the regulations of the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and the regulation of admission of ETH Zurich, respectively.

Specialization in Advanced Structures and Aerospace Engineering

Nature has developed magnificent and highly effective structures to protect and reinforce any kind of plant and animal. Accordingly novel materials and process technologies as well as new achievements in the field of computational methods allow engineers to realize advanced structures with increased weight-efficiency and improved functionalities, and thus respond to stringent requirements of today’s products. Structures are everywhere. They play a central role in the development of technical products and systems, even though they are not the purpose of the development itself.

Typical examples herein are transportation systems such as aircraft, railway-systems and cars, where innovative structural solutions made it possible to considerably increase safety and comfort and to significantly reduce consumption and emissions, thus contributing to a sustainable development of our society.

Various Swiss companies are well established and recognised partners on the international market as suppliers of high- tech engineered products and systems for the aerospace, aircraft, automotive and sport industry.

Structures represent a very exciting and future-oriented field of professional activity. Novel materials and technologies combine more and more structural and functional properties, thus opening up for new challenging research fields and industrial applications. In the meantime numerical tools for multiphysics simulations are increasingly used to design and optimise new products.

Concepts, Outline and Visions

The master in Advanced Structures is closely linked to the research interests of Institute. Students are strongly integrated in today’s research activities and work closely together with Ph.D. students. In this way, they get insight into current research projects related to science and/or industry. The main research themes concern:

  • Materials and Process Technologies
  • Computational Structural Mechanics
  • Smart Structures and Adaptive Materials

Student Research Projects, Master Thesis, Internships

Topics for Semester and Master Thesis are strongly related with our research projects and industry cooperations. Furthermore, a close cooperation with our industrial, scientific and educational partners is a key element of our educational offer. We also foster horizontal mobility. As you know, according to ETH regulations you have the possibility to acquire up to 30 ECTS outside of ETH. We have developed in the past years a broad network, which will provide you ideal conditions for including in your curriculum exciting and relevant practical experience.
