CMASLab at the NAFEMS World Congress 2017

The CMASLab participated at the NAFEMS World Congress 2017 that was held from June 11th to 14th 2017 in Stockholm, Sweden. Our lab was represented by Claudia Thurnherr who gave a presentation on her current research entitled “Investigation of non-classical vibration behavior of highly anisotropic corrugated laminates using finite element method”. Rollout of our Focus Projects

On Tuesday, May 30th , the students of CMASLab's focus projects 3DCarb, ftero and SeatCase presented their prototypes to the public for the first time. During ten-minute presentations, they provided technical insights into the products they developed and the goals they achieved, followed by an exhibit in the main hall of ETH Zurich's main building and outside on the adjacent Polyterrasse. Final Presentations of Bachelor's and Semester Theses

On May 17th and May 19th , the students conducting a semester or bachelor's thesis, which they performed during the spring semester 2017 at CMASLab, held their final presentations. During 20 minutes, each student had the opportunity to present their accomplishments and was then asked questions about the work by the doctoral candidates and senior academic staff. The CMASLab team congratulates the students on the high quality of work and wishes them a lot of success with the continuation of their studies. Read more 


Visit of Aircraft Structures Lecture to Pilatus Aircraft Ltd in Stans

On April 25th , the students of the Aircraft Structures lecture of Prof. Paolo Ermanni visited the facilities of Swiss aircraft manufacturer Pilatus in Stans, NW. The Pilatus representatives showcased the company and the opportunities for alumni of ETHZ and gave a very insightful tour through the manufacturing and assembly facilities. Read more 


CMASLab at the 2017 SOLA Run

On May 6th , members of the CMASLab took part in the 44th  edition of the SOLA relay run through the Zurich metropolitan area. Covering over 116 km of gravel, tarmac and grass in just under 9 hours and 40 minutes, our group took the 257th  place of more than 1000 participating teams, despite the rainy weather. We thank the complete SOLA staff for organizing a wonderful event and we look forward to the next run in 2018! Read more 


CMASLab at the Bodensee Aerospace Meeting

On Thursday, April 27th , Dr. Giulio Molinari represented CMASLab at the 6th Bodensee Aerospace Meeting in Geinberg, Austria. The conference was held under the motto "Light & International" and was mainly sponsored by FACC, who invited the attendees to a tour through their facilities. Dr. Molinari gave a presentation with the title: "Flügeldesign durch massgeschneiderte Steifigkeitsverteilung - Erweiterte Funktionalität ohne Komplexität". Read more 


CMASLab at SPIE Smart Structures/NDE

Jascha Schmied and Edgar Flores Parra from the Electro-Mechanical Material Systems group represented CMASLab at the SPIE Conference on smart structures and non-destructive evaluation. They presented their work on vibration attenuation and the manipulation of wave propagation using periodic internally resonant and electromechanically coupled media. The conference was held in Portland, Oregon from the 25th to the 29th of March 2017. Read more 


Visit of Prof. Paolo Gaudenzi

On Friday, March 31st , Prof. Paolo Gaudenzi and a small delegation from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' visited our group. Prof. Gaudenzi gave a short seminar on damage mechanisms in composite laminates due to low-velocity impacts, followed by a visit to our laboratories. We thank him and his group for the interesting discussions and wish them great success with their future work! Read more 


Intermediate Presentations and Best Thesis Award

On Friday, March 24th , the intermediate presentations of the student projects supervised by CMASLab took place. The in total fifty Bachelor's, Semester and Master's projects - many of which are conducted in the framework of Focus Projects offered by our lab - are closely related to our research activities: the students study aerospace structures, electro-mechanical material systems and processing and computational analysis of composite structures. Doctoral examination of Claudia Thurnherr

On March 22nd 2017, Claudia Thurnherr successfully defended her doctoral thesis entitled “New analysis methods for corrugated laminates”. The Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures Lab congratulates her for this great achievement and wishes her all the best for her future! Read more 


Final presentations of the Master's Theses

On Thursday February 23rd , 2017, 11 students who carried out their Master's Theses under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ermanni held their final presentations at the Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures (CMASLab) and showed the final results of their Master's projects. Winter Examination Session and Start of Spring Semester 2017

The winter examination session, which started on January 23rd , involved many interesting bachelor and master lectures offered by CMASLab such as Leichtbau, Adaptive Materials for Structural Applications, Mechanics of Composite Materials and Methoden der Strukturanalyse. The exam session officially ended on February 17th and we hope all the students enjoyed the courses and acquired a lot of useful knowledge and skills! The Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures Lab welcomes Daniel Filipovic

On February 1st , Daniel Filipovic started his work as a new doctoral candidate within the Computational Structural Mechanics group at CMASLab. Mr. Filipovic obtained both his Master's  and Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at ETH Zurich. During his studies, he specialized in mechanics and processing of composite materials. We wish him a good start and look forward to his work! Read more 


Ski Weekend in Schruns

From Friday to Sunday, January 20th to 22nd , the Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures stayed in Schruns (Austria) for its annual ski weekend. The weather and snow conditions were perfect and we thank Dominic and Martin for organizing an enjoyable and memorable weekend. Read more 


CMASLab at AIAA SciTech

This year's AIAA Scitech Conference was held from 9-13 January in Grapevine, Texas. The conference featured more than 2000 technical presentations from various aerospace disciplines. Our CMAS lab was represented by Falk Runkel with a contribution about his current research in the field of morphing aircraft structures. Read more 


The Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures Lab welcomes Maximilian Volk

On January 9th , Maximilian Volk started his work as a new doctoral candidate within the Composite Materials and Processing group at CMASLab. Mr. Volk obtained his Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on lightweight systems and polymer engineering as well as his Bachelor's degree in a joint course at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the National Institute of Applied Sciences of Lyon. We wish him a good start and look forward to his work! Read more 


The Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures Lab welcomes Ayyoub Kabachi

On January 3rd , Ayyoub Kabachi started his work as a new doctoral candidate within the Composite Materials and Processing group at CMASLab. Mr. Kabachi obtained his Master's degree in Applied Mechanics and Composites Engineering at École Centrale in Nantes and previously obtained a degree in Materials Engineering at École Nationale Polytechnique in Algiers. Intermediate Presentations of the Focus Projects

On Wednesday, December 21st , the students of our three ongoing Focus Projects "3DCarb", "ftero" and "SeatCase" presented the status of their projects and explained the concepts of their respective products. Visit to Zai AG

On Monday, December 19th , students of the Grand Challenges in Engineering Design lecture, accompanied by members of the CMASLab, had the opportunity of visiting the high-end ski manufacturing company Zai AG in Disentis. The students were able to experience how a pair of skis is manufactured/assembled and were told about the iterative design process at the company. CMASLab kindly thanks Mr. Jacomet and the employees at Zai AG for the interesting and inspiring visit. Read more
