Paolo Ermanni ist seit dem 1. April 2003 ordentlicher Professor für Strukturtechnologien an der ETH Zürich.

Paolo Ermanni, geboren am 15. Juni 1959, von Bissone (TI), studierte an der Abteilung für Maschineningenieurwesen der ETH Zürich. Seine Assistenzzeit am Institut für Konstruktion und Bauweisen der ETH Zürich bei Prof. M. Flemming schloss er 1990 mit einer Dissertation über Prozesstechnologien für die Realisierung von hochintegrierten CFK-Flugzeugrumpfstrukturen ab. Während seiner mehrjährigen Industrietätigkeit als Fachverantwortlicher und später als Projektleiter bei der Firma DaimlerChrysler Aerospace Airbus GmbH in Hamburg, befasste er sich mit Zukunftsprojekten und insbesondere mit strukturellen und technologischen Aspekten bei der Realisierung eines zivilen Überschallflugzeuges der zweiten Generation. Anfangs 1997 nahm er eine neue Herausforderung bei der Unternehmensberatungsfirma A.T. Kearney in Mailand im Bereich Strategic Sourcing an. Am 1. April 1998 wurde er an der ETH Zürich zum ausserordentlichen Professor gewählt.

Paolo Ermanni interessiert sich für technische Struktursysteme und insbesondere für die Erhöhung der strukturellen Effizienz und Funktionalität durch den Einsatz von Faserverbundwerkstoffen und smart Materials. Ein Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt in der Entwicklung und Modellierung von neuartigen Materialsystemen und Prozesstechnologien. Die Erforschung von Optimierungsmethoden in Verbindung mit numerischen Struktur- und Prozesssimulationswerkzeugen stellt einen zweiten Schwerpunkt dar. Das Zentrum für Strukturtechnologien pflegt zahlreiche Kooperationen mit nationalen und internationalen Industrien und Forschungsinstitutionen und strebt ein ausgeglichenes Portfolio von Grundlagenprojekten und Industriekooperationen an.

Paolo Ermanni has been full Professor of structure technologies the ETH Zurich since April 1, 2003.

Paolo Ermanni, born June 15, 1959, from Bissone (TI) studied Mechanical Engineering at the ETH Zürich. He received his Dr. sc. techn. degree at the ETH Zurich in 1990 under the guidance of Prof. Dr. M. Flemming. His research work was focusing on process technologies for highly integrated aircraft fuselage structures made of composite materials. He spent more than five years at DaimlerChrysler Aerospace Airbus GmbH in Hamburg as a senior engineer and later on, as a project manager. At Airbus he was mainly dealing with structural and technological issues related to the realisation of a second generation of civil supersonic aircraft. In 1997 he took on a new challenge as a manager in the consulting firm A.T. Kearney in Milan. He was appointed associate professor at ETH Zurich in 1998.

His interests focus on lightweight and adaptive structures made of composite and smart materials. Research is currently focusing on two areas. The first area includes design, modelling and characterisation of novel material systems and processes. A second focal point of the group is computational structural mechanics including the development of novel optimisation algorithms in conjunction with the numerical simulation of structures and manufacturing processes. The Centre of Structure Technologies is closely working together with different national and international research institutes and industries, seeking a well-balanced project portfolio of fundamental and applied projects.
